Juneteenth Spotlight: Melandie Y. Hines, Inkster Director of Special Projects, Business Owner & Board Member of Westland
Melandie Y. Hines is a dynamic community activist who currently resides in Westland, Michigan. Melandie Y. Hines is also a Trustee for the Wayne Westland Board of Education and believes that we must educate and prepare all of our students to be knowledgeable, responsible, and contributing members to society. She was a lifetime student in the Wayne Westland Community School District focusing on college prep courses and participated in the Upward Bound program. She graduated from Wayne Memorial High School in 1997. During this time Melandie become active in the community and pursued her dreams as a Reserve Police Officer for the Inkster Police Department. She then continued her education; with Bachelor’s Degree in Criminal Justice at Saginaw Valley State University in 2001.
Melandie Y. Hines wanted to continue her education and was able to excel in the receipt of her Master’s Degree in Business Management/ Human Resources Management from the University of Phoenix in 2006. Melandie Hines was the wife of the late Inkster Police Officer Shawn Hines (victim of cancer) and she is passionate about being a loving single parent to their son Elijah Hines. While active in her community, church and with the support of her family Melandie wanted to make a bigger impact on society and pave a positive future for her child and other children in the community. As the newly elected Board of Education Member she is the liaison of communications on behalf of the Board to the Michigan Association of School Boards.
Melandie Y. Hines is dedicated to public service and believes in giving back to the community. She is currently serving her second term as a Precinct Delegate for the City of Westland for the 13th Congressional District under the honorable John Conyers Jr. Melandie’s consistent activism and political networking over past seven years has afforded her personal and community growth through grassroots organization, strategic planning, and precinct delegate training. Melandie Hines works as a Benefits Counselor at Colonial Life for the American Federation of Government Employees which serves over 600,000 union members nationwide for the Federal Government.
She is currently a Mentor for the Champions of Wayne program and an active member of the MDP Justice Caucus, Alpha Sigma Alpha Sorority, NAACP, Parent Teacher Organization, Wayne Westland Transitions Committee, Detroit Society of Human Resources Management, and the Director of the Praise and Mime Ministry at Power House Evangelistic Ministries. Melandie is a passionate trailblazer, who is dedicated to the implementation of growth and transparency, and has shown the willpower to overcome obstacles in life by being a community role model of change.
